The opening
scene of the movie starts with a beautiful morning where a girl named Clarissa
Starling (Jodie Foster) is seen to be in FBI training. At the same moment, she
is called upon by her boss. He tells her
about terrible murders happening in the
city where the psycho killer named Buffalo Bills inhumanly murders innocent girls and skins them. To
fetch information about the killer, they decide to take help from another
lunatic cannibal named Dr. Lecter. He had been in a prison in a mental asylum
for years.
But the problem was Dr. Lecter was denying to talk to anyone from the FBI. So her boss commands her to go meet him with the hope that she would be able to make him talk to her. The next day after reading the case file and personal details of Dr. Lecter, Clarissa heads to the mental hospital. There at first, she meets Dr. Chilton who frightens her by sharing the horrible wrongdoings of Dr. Lecter. She asks Dr. Chilton if she wants to meet him alone. Dr. Lecter was a very brilliant man who could see through people. At first, he denies to tell anything to her and even insults her. As Clarissa is seen going out of the cell, she gets insulted by the psychopaths inside the asylum. But she boldly deals with it, and being impressed by her courage; Dr. Lecter calls her back and asks her to find his patient named Muffet.
While leaving the asylum, Dr. Lecter says “Understand yourself, Clarissa”.This happens to be a code, she could crack which meant Dr. Lecter was from Baltimore and there is a store named ‘Your self ’ there. Clarissa breaks into that store and surprisingly finds a man’s head in a jar. She comes back to meet Dr. Lecter and asks about that head. He acknowledges that Benjamin Raspail was the actual name of the unfortunate man (known as Mr. Muffet) who the girl discovered.
Buffalo Bill on the other hand had already selected his new victim, her name was Kateherine Martin. She was kidnapped and kept in a deep well. Another similar murder incident occurred and Clarissa and her boss head towards the scene and during the investigation she finds a moth inside the victim’s throat. The moth was an Asian breed, which meant someone was growing them. Clarissa heads towards the mental asylum to talk to Dr. Lecter. He tells her that he would talk more about Buffalo Bill if and only if she would reveal something from her past. Clarissa shares how difficult her life had been after the murder of her father by the criminals. Now Dr. Lecter asks her about the details of the latest case and she tells that they found a moth inside her throat. Dr. Lecter explains that it represents how things transform from an ugly cocoon to a beautiful butterfly. In the same way, Buffalo aspires to change into a woman as well. He had tried to do gender surgery as well but was denied by the hospital. This trauma forced him to be that cruel to young girls.
Dr. Lecter was sent to talk to Kateherine’s mother and they make a deal that if he tells them about the murderer, they would send him to a nicer and more comfortable place. Dr. Lecter tells that Louis Frend was the actual name of Buffalo Bill, but later it turned out to be a piece of misleading information.
Clarissa asked Dr. Lecter to help her with the true information. This time too, Dr. Lecter asked her to reveal something from her past. This time she shared how she tried to save a lamb but people snatched it from her and killed it. That childhood trauma was still disturbing her. Dr. Lecter couldn’t share much as the officers came to take Clarissa away but told her that everything she was looking for was in the file. This meeting turned out to be their last meeting. Dr. Lecter dealt with the police and then the ambulance crew severely and made an escape.
On the other hand, Clarissa was discovering the clues from the file as Dr. Lecter had pointed out significant things in the file. She got to know that Buffalo Bill knew his first victim personally. She was Frederica Bimel who was a tailor and stitched clothes specifically for Mr. Lipman. She went to the location and knocked on the door. But little did she know it was Buffalo Bill who opened the door. When she was inquiring about the person who opened the door, she sees a similar moth there and becomes clear that it was the same psycho killer Buffalo Bill. She follows him to the basement and discovers Kateherine in the well crying for rescue. Buffolo Bill cleverly uses night vision goggles to escape in the dark but Clarissa eventually shoots Buffolo Bill with all her courage and rescues Katherine.
For her bravery and successful solving of the case, Clarissa is honored with a badge and an ID in an event. She is congratulated by John Crawford, who adds, "Your father would be proud of you." The movie is wrapped with the ending scene where the phone rings, Clarissa answers the call and it was Dr. Lecter. He asks her if her lambs were silent. He also asks her not to trace her and he would not come on her way too. He also states, "I'd love to chat a little longer, but an old friend came over for dinner." After that, Dr. Chilton is seen to be coming off the aircraft and he is followed by Dr. Lecter who clearly has an intention of making Dr. Chilton his next prey.
