Plot summary:

The opening sequence of the movie introduces Charlie Babbit who is a car dealer in Los Angeles. Charlie buys four Lamborghini cars for his customers by taking down payments from them and also by taking some loans. But his cars are questioned by EPA, Environmental Protection Agency which certifies cars after looking at the pollution measurement and now the cars stopped at the port. Charlie has a small office where he himself, his girlfriend Susanna, and his friend work. The customers now start asking for the down payment back because the cars are not delivered yet. He assures them that the cars will be soon certified by the EPA and hence will be delivered.

Now Charlie goes on a date, basically a drive with his girlfriend Susanna where he receives a call. It is his friend Lanny who tells him that his father is no more and tomorrow is his funeral. So Charlie goes there. Now they go to their dad’s funeral. After going there he gets to know that his father has just left a vintage car and a bouquet for him although he had a lot of wealth. He also gets to know that he has left his three million dollar property to an unnamed trustee. This leaves Charlie in shock because according to him he was the only child. Charlie after a thorough search knows that the unnamed trustee is in a mental institute. Charlie goes there and for the very first time gets to know that his elder brother Raymond lives there. He never had an idea that he had an elder brother too. His brother Raymond is autistic, which means he has some developmental disability due to differences in his brain. There he meets Dr. Bruner who informs him that Raymond himself is the unnamed trustee. He also adds that Raymond doesn’t have any money concept and he doesn’t even understand that his father is no more in this world.

Charlie starts spending a lot of time with his brother. He even takes him out of the mental institute telling the concerned that he was going to take him just for a stroll. He takes him to a hotel to stay. But since his brother is autistic, his routine seems to be disturbed because Charlie has brought him there. Raymond starts becoming difficult asking for those things. This makes Charlie so irritated that he starts misbehaving with his elder brother. This makes Susanna sad and tells him that he only uses others for his benefit and nothing more and leaves the place. The next day Charlie and his brother go to the restaurant for breakfast where he calls the doctor and says that his brother Raymond will now stay with him and if they want to take him back, he should get 1.5 million dollars from that three million. Doctor Bruner rejects such a deal but Charlie adds that they can’t even case a file of kidnapping since he is his brother. He further tells that he will bring him back if his deal is fulfilled and otherwise they will meet in court. While returning from the restaurant, Raymond crashes with a waitress and the toothpicks from her hand fall off. The next moment Raymond tells the total count of the toothpicks. At first Charlie and the waitress do not believe him but after the waiter counts them it turns out to be true. This leaves Charlie impressed.

Now they go to the airport so that they can head towards Los Angeles. There he gets a call from Lanny who tells him that it has become difficult for him to keep the customers waiting and they either want the payment back or the car. Charlie asks for some more time. Raymond doesn’t agree to go by that airline because he knows that there had been many crashes on that airline before and it is not safe to go by that airline. And hence Charlie takes the name of other airlines but Raymond keeps on giving the crash count of those airlines. Raymond has a keen sense of remembering everything he reads and since he had read about the airlines in the past, hence he knows everything now. Charlie gets frustrated and starts taking him forcefully but Raymond starts crying loudly and as a result, he has to take him by the car. But the problem doesn’t end here.

There was a deadly accident on the highway and as a result, was a huge traffic jam. Raymond feels very uncomfortable and decides to go on foot. But Charlie somehow manages to stop him from doing that. It starts raining the next day and Raymond refuses to travel since it is raining and hence they have to stay a whole day in the hotel. The next day, Charlie restarts the journey, and on the way he stops at a phone booth for a call but he realizes that his brother is not in the car. He gets worried and finally finds him after a search. Charlie takes Raymond to a psychiatrist. After some examinations and interrogations, they get to know that Raymond has a special ability. He can do very big mathematical calculations within some seconds. The psychiatrist even adds that Raymond should join NASA because his capabilities seem to fit there. Charlie now stays in a hotel with his brother where he asks him how he can do such calculations so fast. But Raymond replies that even he doesn’t know how he does so.

Charlie gets a very old photo of him, Raymond, and his father from Raymond. Now after looking at the photo, Charlie figures out that Raymond is the same guy whom Charlie used to call ‘Rain Man’ instead of Raymond in his childhood. Now in the next scene, it is seen that Raymond gets afraid of the hot water tap and now Charlie remembers the incident in his childhood where Raymond saved him from hot water but his father considered Raymond as the one who did that to him and sent him to the asylum. Charlie has now started understanding his brother. He even brings a special tv for Raymond since he kept on telling that his schedule was disturbed. Charlie again gets a call that his cars are not certified by EPA. This leaves him in shock. Charlie now has a debt of eighty thousand dollars.

Charlie in order to know more about his brother’s counting skills spreads cards on the bonnet of his car and takes some of the cards to his hands. He asks him which card is on the bonnet and which is in his hands. Raymond correctly tells all of them. And hence an idea strikes his mind. He teaches him how to play cards and takes Raymond to the casino and he plays it so well that they earn a sum of eighty-six thousand dollars. Everyone around them gets amazed at their play. Charlie is very happy with Raymond that he has helped him get his debt off in a single day. They go to a beautiful hotel that day and Charlie teaches Raymond how to dance there.

It is seen that love for his brother is growing more and more in Charlie’s heart.  Susanna also comes back to Charlie’s life. The next day, three of them go to the same casino but the owner rejects them from playing and even threatens them to not be seen nearby. Now they get back to Los Angeles. Dr Bruner comes to meet Charlie and offers him a check of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and asks Raymond back because it is the best place for him and he had even promised their father that he will take care of Raymond. Charlie now replies that he doesn’t want anything from him and neither from the property but wants custody of his brother so that he can keep him for his lifetime. They bring a psychologist from the court to decide whether to give custody to Charlie or to the institution. He asks Raymond for number of times but he doesn’t give clear answers at all. The interrogations seem difficult for Raymond and hence Charlie asks the psychologist to take the decision on the basis of whatever he has asked till now.

Charlie has now started feeling that he probably won’t get Raymond’s custody. Charlie gets emotional and tells Raymond that he feels lucky to have a brother like him. The next day he gets to know that he has lost custody. The next day he goes to drop Raymond off the train with Dr. Bruner. Charlie assures Raymond that he will come to meet him every two weeks.
